Cottonwood Historical Association Board Member Phillip Bennett Passed away last night from a sudden heart attack. Phillip was only in his 50s. We will miss him a lot.
The photo here is from Chili and Stew night last year. Phillip and his cousin Bryan Bennett made the chili.
Phillip also cooked the chicken for the Historical Association Annual meeting and served at the dinner. He came and helped out at the musicals, always coming late to help move the tables, sweep and clean up.
Phillip was raised in Cottonwood. You'll remember his father, Arnett Bennett and grandmother, Lee Bennett.

Phillip Bennett, age 52, of Cross Plains, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2011 in Abilene. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 3, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in Cross Plains with John Swift officiating; burial will follow in the Cottonwood Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home Wednesday, February 2nd from 5-7 p.m. to receive friends and relatives for a time of sharing memories.
He was born on August 5, 1958 in Fort Worth to Arnett L. Bennett. He was raised by his father and grandmother, Lee Bennett in Cottonwood, Texas. He graduated from Cross Plains High School in 1976. He married Sheri Brown on February 14, 1981. They made their home in Cross Plains and were blessed with five children.
Phillip was a proud and blessed father first, a beloved son, brother and cousin and a loyal friend. He was best known by his humor and smile and his "Floopisms" - the most remembered being "Remember who you are and where you come from. His family, friends, his country and the Dallas Cowboys were his greatest passions. He truly loved the outdoors and hunting. He was an avid geography and history enthusiast and genuinely loved life. He was known for making people laugh and to feel like part of his own family.
He was a member of First Baptist Church and an active board member of the Cottonwood Historical Association. He worked for Pioneer Farmer's Coop, in the oilfield, at First Baptist Church for a number of years. He was currently employed at Abilene Christian University as an irrigation tech and truly felt that his work wasn't just a joy-it was work worth doing well. His friends and co-workers there were close as family.
He is survived by his sons, Michael "Mikey" Bennett and wife Kaci of Cross Plains; Andrew "Andy" of Cross Plains; Cpl. Elias Bennett of Hawaii and L.Cpl. Zachary Bennett of Afghanistan; daughter, Brittany Bennett of Abilene; four brothers, Robert Bennett of Cross Plains; David Bennett; half-brother's, Jimmy Dean, Bobby Dale Cochran; half-sister's, Mary and Clydene; mother, Bonnie S. Cochran, all of Sulphur Springs ; two uncle's Wallace and John Bennett both of Cross Plains, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his father Arnett Bennett.
